LLDPE - Linear Low Density Polyethylene

Linear Low Density Polyethylene

Linear low density polyethylene is a type of low density polyethylene that has been copolymerised with substances called olefins to create a unique type of polyethylene with usefullldpe.jpg properties not possessed by LDPE.

Olefins are chemical compounds with carbon to carbon bonds, and ethylene itself is an olefin. During production of LLDPE, LDPE is copolymerised with longer chain olefins in either a gas phase reaction or a solution reaction. The type of manufacturing process used will determine which long chain olefins are used, with butene and hexene being common copolymers in gas phase reactions, and ethylene a more popular copolymer in solution reactions.

Regardless of the manufacturing process, the result of copolymerisation is a lightweight substance with high tensile strength and improved impact resistance.

LLDPE has proved to be highly popular with manufacturers and consumers around the world, replacing other types of polyethylene in various applications.

LLDPE Benefits

Why has LLDPE become so popular? Well, to begin with, LLDPE is highly flexible with good elongation properties that allow it to stretch to greater extremes than LDPE. It also possesses enhanced puncture resistance, impact resistance and tensile strength when compared to LDPE.

LLDPE is largely inert and has good chemical resistance properties. This means it is suitable for containers which contain dilute household chemicals and some types of foodstuffs.

Perhaps the most useful property of LLDPE is its ability to retain structural integrity at lower thicknesses than traditional materials, allowing manufacturers to create thinner sheets of plastic, conserving both materials and the environment.

LLDPE Applications

As has been mentioned, LLDPE is now used in many applications where LDPE or other polyethylene plastics were once used. LLDPE is a commonly used material for plastic bags, plastic wrap, toys, pipes, containers, cabling and tubing. Its flexibility and stretchability make it a preferred choice in applications where the product undergoes fairly rigorous low impact usage, such as in the case of children’s toys and plastic bags.
